The Reformed Church in America is rooted in the Word of God and has grown out of the Protestant Reformation's activity through John Calvin and the church in the Netherlands. This scene from the Synod of Dort represents our more modern, historical roots.
The Dutch Reformed Church started in America with the arrival of Johannes Michaelius on Manhattan Island in 1628. Prior to that Bastian Krol and Jan Huygens woas 'comforters of the sick' from 1624 to 1628. Michaelius organized the first congregation which still continues as the Collegiate church in New York City.
The church started in New Jersey about 1660 in the Bergen County area. This church, typical of colonial styles, is the Three Mile Run church, started in the New Brunswick area in 1703.
The settlers quickly traveled up the Hudson River and began their second congregation in what is now Albany, New York. the First Church of Albany continues its ministry to the present.
