The 2009 M. Eugene Osterhaven Lecture Series

Amor Iustititae: Loving Justice in the Reformed Tradition

Dirkie Smit

The 2009 Osterhaven Lecture Series at Western Theological Seminary, led by Dirkie Smit, professor of systematic theology and ethics at Stellenbosch University in South Africa, reflected on the importance of, and yet the changing and often contested nature of, justice in the Reformed faith and tradition.

The first lecture (Amor Iustitiae--Loving Justice) dealt with the central place of compassionate justice in the Belhar Confession along with the confession's roots in the struggle of Reformed Christians in South Africa against apartheid. It also considered the confession's reception and contemporary implications.

The second lecture (Sol Iustititae Illustra Nos--Sun of Righteousness, Shine upon Us) dealt with the longing for God's justice in the Reformed faith and tradition, focusing particularly on Calvin, the Heidelberg Catechism, and Barth.

The third lecture (Fiat Iustitiae--Let There Be Justice) discussed the importance of the Christian life in Reformed thought, dealing with issues of justification and justice, human agency and ethics, discipleship, and sanctification.
