Political situation:

Until the end of World War I in 1918, the lands that make up present day Croatia were part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In 1991, Croatia declared its independence from Yugoslavia after four years of bitter fighting against the Serb armies.

Economic situation:

Before its independence, the Republic of Croatia was the most prosperous and industrialized area in Yugoslavia, with a 33 percent higher per capita output than the Yugoslav average. After a mild recession in 2000, their economy has slowed down. Unemployment remains at 18 percent while economic growth has been gradually increasing over the last several years.
