Mission

Mission becomes a way of life when we reach out to people with the gospel, meeting needs in our own neighborhoods and cities and through global partnerships.

Hungarian Church Leader Thanks RCA for Supporting the Year of the Bible

"The Hungarian Reformed Church is delighted that the RCA has proven its fraternity in this [Year of the Bible] endeavor," writes Berti Tamas, an ecumenical officer of the Hungarian church.

Since last fall, RCA congregations and individuals have given $67,205 to buy Bibles for Roma (gypsy) young people in Hungary. The RCA also helps support Tamas, who works to revitalize Hungarian congregations through a new emphasis on mission.

Tamas says that countless posters with the slogan "Happy Is the One Who Reads this Book" (from a Hungarian translation of Revelation 1:3) advertised the launch of the Year of the Bible in Catholic and Protestant churches throughout Hungary.

"It is such a delight to see people receive a Bible for the first time--the happiness this brings to so many Roma!

"I believe that for them the words really do come to life, and what they read makes them happy. They can and may have access to this treasure. Their lives can change through what the Scripture says through the Spirit.

"We are living in a traditional, post-communist world. Can there be a greater mission task than for as many people as possible to lay their hands on God's written Word?

"Thank you for your support in this."

Opportunities

  • Young adult volunteers (ages 22 to 32): work for justice and witness to your faith among the Roma people of Central and Eastern Europe by serving for 10 months in Hungary. You'll work with other volunteers from nearly every European country and with Dick and Carolyn Otterness, RCA mission personnel in Budapest. Begin fall 2008 or 2009. For more information, contact Mission Volunteer Program coordinator Jay Harsevoort at (800) 968-3943, ext. 254, or jharsevoort@rca.org.
  • Pray for Carolyn and Dick Otterness as they mentor and serve as consultants to volunteers who minister with Roma in Hungary and neighboring countries.
