Delegates to General Synod 2015 have elected Evan Vermeer as synod’s new president-elect.

Delegates to General Synod 2015 have elected Evan Vermeer as synod’s new president-elect.

Vermeer has previously served in various capacities with the regional synod, including president; as classis and General Synod delegate; and with the General Synod Council. He also has served the church as teacher, deacon, and consistory vice president and clerk.

“I stand before you as a weak, fallible, sinful human…but I am also saved by God’s grace,” Vermeer told delegates in accepting the election. “The prayers that are going up [on my behalf]–it’s amazing. I promise to seek God’s will.

“To lead properly, we need to know God’s will for our personal lives…Transformation begins with personal submission. God calls for our all. This journey of submission is not easy–I implore you to join me to submit and seek God’s will.”

Vermeer will be installed as president during General Synod closing worship on Tuesday. As president, he will visit RCA churches and classes around the United States and Canada to listen to what people are saying throughout the church. He will also serve as the presiding officer at General Synod 2016.

Vermeer is married to Nancy; they have five children and five grandchildren, with another on the way. He is an elder at First Reformed Church in Sioux Center, Iowa.
