Several hundred homes in the Hattiesburg area were damaged in a March 2016 flood. Just as the area began to recover, a tornado hit in January 2017. There are more than 1,500 homes in need of repair.

Volunteer opportunities: 

Work could include drywall, painting, roofing, flooring, framing, etc. There may still be a need for demolition, mucking out, general water damage repair, siding repair, sheetrock finish work, painting, and replacing flooring/trim. The local construction coordinator will assign work projects that are appropriate to the size and skill level of your group.

Accommodations: 

The volunteer house includes bunkbeds, restrooms, showers, and a kitchen to prepare your own meals. This 10,000 square foot house offers the comfort of home and has a maximum capacity of 60 people. Please bring your own bedding, pillow, towels, and personal toiletries.  

Cost notes: 

The cost is $15 per person, per night. This fee is payable to the local organization in Hattiesburg. Your group is responsible for all costs associated with your trip. World Renew DRS does not charge for arranging group mission trips.

Packing suggestions: 

Sleeping bags, pillows, towels, and toiletries. A general packing list can be found on page 9 of Prepare to Serve, a guide compiled by WR-DRS. Materials and basic tools are provided and coordinated by the local construction coordinator. Skilled tradesmen are encouraged to bring their own tools if possible. This should be discussed with the local site coordinator during the planning process.

Requirements: 

Generally, high school age and up. Groups including youth must have an appropriate adult-to-youth ratio and adults who are able to supervise youth for work projects. Teenagers are welcome, but they must be over 18 to handle power tools.

Qualifications: 

It is helpful to have a couple of people with construction experience in your group, but this is not required. The local construction coordinator will provide guidance on work projects.

Cultivate is a program for 18- to 25-year-olds to partner with RCA missionaries for a summer or a full year and see how God is at work in another part of the globe.
