Severe storms and flooding in October 2015 led to more than 11 dam breaks, 175 water rescues, and more than 800 people living in temporary housing shelters in South Carolina. More than 80,000 South Carolina households have requested assistance with recovery from our mission partner World Renew Disaster Response Services.

Volunteer opportunities:

Work could include mucking out homes, mold treatment, construction, carpentry, roofing, electrical work, plumbing, drywall installation and finishing, flooring installation, and painting. A local construction coordinator will assign work projects based on the size and skill level of the volunteer group. The projects will be organized in partnership with South Carolina organizations that coordinate across the state.

Volunteer groups could work in any of the following counties: Berkeley, Charleston, Dorchester, Georgetown, Horry, Lexington, Orangeburg, Richland, Sumter, West Columbia, and Williamsburg.

Accommodations:

Most groups will stay in churches. Each facility will offer a place to sleep, restrooms, showers, and a kitchen for volunteer groups to prepare meals.

Cost notes:

Because there are multiple locations in which a volunteer group could be serving, the cost ranges from free to $25 per person per night, depending on location.

Packing suggestions:

Please bring sleeping bags, pillows, towels, and toiletries. A general list of what to bring can be found in Prepare to Serve. Materials and basic tools are provided by the local site coordinator. Skilled trades workers are encouraged to bring their own tools if possible. This should be discussed with the local site coordinator during the planning process.

Qualifications:

Volunteers must be at least 15 years old with adult supervision, or 14 years old with a parent or court-appointed legal guardian. It is helpful to have a couple of people with construction experience in your group, but this is not required. The local construction coordinator will provide guidance on work projects.
