Situated in the poorest congressional district in the country, Mott Haven Reformed Church does not let that stop them from sharing the grace of the Lord to their community. Mott Haven is in the business of transforming the youth and young families in the South Bronx neighborhood. They are “the church in the heart of the community, with the community in the heart of the church.”
“Then they said, ‘Let us start building!’ So they committed themselves to the common good” (Nehemiah 2:18b).
Volunteers will have opportunities to serve the church by repairing the actual church building, but also by stepping into the life and community where the church is situated in the Bronx. Volunteers are especially needed to replace the roof and floor of the entryway to make the church a safe space for people to worship in.
Volunteers will be housed at Mott Haven Reformed Church. Groups will need to bring sleeping bags to sleep on the floor of the sanctuary. There are two showers in the church for groups to use. The church and community is committed to serve the volunteers by providing meals to the team.
Costs may vary. If the food and housing are covered, teams will be expected to help pay for some materials for the building projects.
There is much to do in the New York City area, including the Bronx Zoo, exploring downtown New York City, and spending time in Central Park.
