In August 2017 Hurricane Harvey tore through east Texas, damaging more than 320,000 homes in the greater Houston area. The RCA is partnering with World Renew Disaster Response Services in the long-term recovery efforts throughout the 39 counties affected by this massive storm.
Volunteers are needed to help with home repairs and cleaning. Work may include mucking out and gutting homes, installing sheetrock, painting, replacing flooring and trim, repairing roofs, and fixing electrical or plumbing systems. A local construction coordinator will assign projects that are appropriate to the size and skill level of your group.
Several churches and community centers have opened their doors to house volunteer teams. Accommodations vary but range from air mattresses or cots on a gym floor to dorm-style lodging with bunk beds. Some places may provide meals while others will have a kitchen where you can prepare your own food. The exact housing location for your group will depend on how many people you have and facility availability.
The cost for lodging will range from free to a reasonable daily fee that may or may not include your meals. Fees will be determined as you arrange your trip and are payable to your local coordinator in Texas.
Please bring sleeping bags, pillows, towels, and toiletries. A general packing list can be found on page nine of Preparing to Serve , a guide compiled by World Renew DRS. Materials and basic tools are provided and coordinated by the local construction coordinator. Skilled tradesmen are encouraged to bring their own tools if possible. This should be discussed with the local site coordinator during the planning process.
