Heartland Synod executive John Sikkink reflects on 23 years in ministry leadership.

[John Sikkink]

By John Sikkink

How many of us have pushed back against change in our lives over the years? I encountered a big change 23 years ago when I left banking to work for the Synod of the Heartland, where I helped start new churches. Instead of pushing back, I embraced the change and have been blessed for taking that risk.

Transformed & Transforming is the RCA’s 15-year strategy, and it also requires change. All of our churches continue to change, but are we changing in a way that radically follows Christ in mission together? My retirement from the Synod of the Heartland will cause another change in my life, but I don’t plan for it to change my commitment to radically follow Christ in mission. I ask each of you to make the same commitment.

A piece of Transformed & Transforming that I have adopted is to live and love like Jesus. I pray that each of you will pick a piece of Transformed & Transforming and let it change you. Then bring the same challenge to your church.

On November 1, 2015, Tom Smith became the Synod of the Heartland coordinator. It’s a change for him and for the synod staff. Please pray for Tom and the Synod of the Heartland staff as they walk with our classes and churches to radically follow Christ in mission together.

John Sikkink retired from his position as Synod of the Heartland coordinator in November 2015.
