In the Saturday morning session, delegates at the Reformed Church in America’s General Synod gave initial approval to a proposed change to the Book of Church Order that allows for annual meetings of the General Synod to be held either in-person or electronically—with the requirement that an in-person gathering be held at least once every three years.
The proposal was brought forward by the Commission on Church Order (CCO), following instruction from the 2024 synod to move to triennial synods in-person and digital synods on the other two years. The amendment to the Book of Church Order (CO 25-4) that was adopted today is underlined:
The General Synod shall meet annually, either electronically or in-person, with an in-person meeting occurring at least every third year, at such time and place as was either reported by the Executive Committee at the previous stated session or determined by the Committee on Emergencies. All meetings of the General Synod shall begin and end with prayer.
One proposed amendment shaped the final outcome, with a second that did not pass. The first, which passed by a wide margin (169–11), added the requirement for an in-person meeting at least once every three years. The second amendment sought to formally introduce a “hybrid” meeting model, allowing both in-person and virtual participation at the same time. That proposal was rejected, with delegates citing concerns over cost, complexity, equity, and technological feasibility.
Synod delegates discussed the benefits and drawbacks of virtual versus in-person meetings, highlighting issues such as accessibility, cost, time zone challenges, and technology fatigue. While many supported the affordability and inclusivity of virtual formats, others emphasized the importance of in-person gatherings for community and worship. During the discussion, Rev. Jamie DeVries of First Reformed Church in Holland, MI, posed a thoughtful question to the floor, asking, “How will we safeguard delegates online … to discern the Spirit of God in the path forward?”
Ultimately, the amendment allowing annual electronic or in-person meetings—with an in-person meeting required at least every three years—was approved, passing the recommendation with a final vote of 149–28. The recommendation now goes to classes for consideration over the next year; it requires approval by two-thirds of classes and a declarative vote of General Synod 2026.
