“Last year, I stood here and gave the shortest acceptance speech in the history of General Synod,” recalled Dan Gillett, vice president of General Synod 2016, when he addressed delegates after being voted the next president of General Synod. “It will be the same this year as last year.”

Gillett kept his promise, but he did take a few minutes to share his excitement about the ways he sees God at work in the RCA.

“As [president] Evan Vermeer and I have travelled to RCA churches this year, we’ve heard marvelous stories of renewal, of transformation, of innovation,” Gillett said. “In some places where we had come to talk about the matter of human sexuality, we haven’t even gotten to it. Instead, we were hearing stories of transformation.”

As president, Gillett vowed to do two things: to focus on the mission of the RCA, being lived out through Transformed & Transforming; and to ensure that the processes of General Synod are fair.

Gillett is currently the lead pastor of First Reformed Church in Holland, Michigan. He will be installed as president during General Synod closing worship. He will serve over the coming year and will preside over General Synod 2017.
