General Synod delegates have voted EJ de Waard as president of General Synod 2020. He is pastor emeritus of Owasco Reformed Church in Owasco, New York.

“In and only through the strength of the Holy Spirit, the strength of Christ, and the truth of his Word, I promise to serve you, I promise to listen, I promise to speak in truth, obviously in the command of love,” de Waard told delegates upon his election on Monday, June 10.

“Every morning my wife and I take time—for probably these past 25 years—to read through the Bible,” said de Waard. “Interesting—this morning, Proverbs 16: ‘The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord.’

“I want to thank you for this affirmation and this calling to serve the RCA, the General Synod, the General Synod Council this year.”

He will be installed as president during General Synod closing worship. He will serve over the course of the coming year and will preside over General Synod 2020.
