Delegates have elected Evan Vermeer as synod vice president. He is currently president of the Regional Synod of the Heartland and an elder at First Reformed Church in Sioux Center, Iowa.

Vermeer will serve alongside General Synod president Greg Alderman, his former pastor at First Reformed.

Vermeer has previously served in various capacities with the regional synod, as classis and General Synod delegate, and with the General Synod Council. He also has served the church as teacher, deacon, and consistory vice president and clerk.

Asked to share a few words with synod after his election was announced, he said, “I told you [when I was nominated] that I will seek the Lord and serve you well, and I will do that. I thank you for your faith in me; I ask that you will pray for me.” He invited the church to move forward with him into Transformed and Transforming, the RCA’s new 15-year goal for ministry and mission.

Vermeer is married to Nancy and they have five children and six grandchildren.
