On Monday, June 12, General Synod welcomed the new president of New Brunswick Theological Seminary (NBTS), Micah McCreary, who will begin in the role on July 15.

Anna Jackson, who is on the NBTS board of trustees, introduced McCreary, saying, “He has a pastor’s heart and an educator’s mind. He’s passionate about the church, and we believe he has the gifts and energy to take the seminary to the next place the Spirit is calling us.”

McCreary pledged to love mercy, do justice, and walk humbly with God as president of NBTS.

“I believe that the seminary is a fantastic, awesome place,” McCreary said. “I feel honored to be considered, let alone asked and called [to be its president].”

He also asked for prayers “for me, the seminary, the denomination, and our work together.”

McCreary is currently president and CEO of McCreary and Madison Associates, Inc., a psychological and human resources consulting firm in Richmond, Virginia. McCreary has also been a tenured associate professor of psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) for 21 years. During his time at VCU, McCreary has served as assistant vice provost for diversity, quality enhancement plan coordinator, and codirector of the counseling psychology program.

McCreary holds a B.S. in engineering from the University of Michigan, an M.Div. from the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in counseling psychology from VCU. He and his wife have pastored Spring Creek Baptist Church in Moseley, Virginia, for 16 years. He will transfer his ordination to the RCA.

McCreary expressed excitement about becoming an RCA minister of Word and sacrament. “I won’t pastor a church, but I’ll be pastoring the seminary,” he said.
