Synod delegates have elected Lee DeYoung as vice president of General Synod 2017. He is an elder at Hager Park Reformed Church in Jenison, Michigan.

“I am humbled, truly humbled,” DeYoung told delegates upon his election Tuesday morning. “I’m not worthy of this opportunity, this challenge. I covet your prayers.”

DeYoung is vice president for international ministry at Words of Hope, an international media ministry of the RCA. He reminded delegates of those people Words of Hope serves around the world who are in “hard places” and face persecution for their faith.

“We have so many blessings in this denomination,” he said. “We have history; we have resources. God will continue to bless us if we truly call upon him. … I humbly bow before God [in taking on the role of the presidency] and believe if we are truly grounded in him, his spirit will be with us.”

DeYoung has served the denomination on the Commission on Nominations; he has also served as vice president of consistory and as classis president. He is married to Sheri; they have four children and 21 grandchildren.
