On Monday, June 12, General Synod delegates voted to form diaconal conferences across the RCA (R 17-14). The Task Force on Diaconal Assemblies recommended the formation of these conferences to foster collaboration, education, and encouragement among deacons. Similar conferences already take place in our sister denomination, the Christian Reformed Church in North America.
Synod also considered whether deacons should be part of classes, regional synod, and General Synod. After discussion about the significance of office at assemblies, delegates voted to refer the recommendation (R 17-15) to the Commission on Theology for review. R 17-15 recommended amendments to the Book of Church Order that would include deacons in all assemblies of the church.
