World Communion Sunday

World Communion Sunday, held annually on the first Sunday of October, is a celebration of the unity of the worldwide church through Christ. Christians in congregations around the world participate in the Lord's Supper.

Worship Suggestions

  • Read the Scripture passage for the day in more than one language. Enlist people from your congregation who speak more than one language to help.
  • Incorporate music from different cultures into the service. The congregation could sing, or you could play a CD during the offertory. Check out Table of the World, recorded by Tony Alonso (GIA Publications), which includes songs in Spanish and English as well as incorporating music from other cultures.
  • Include prayers from around the world during your prayer time. Prayers Encircling the World: An International Anthology (Westminster John Knox Press) includes more than 200 global prayers, organized by topic.
  • Consider designating your offering for overseas missions or for a local ecumenical ministry.
  • If your church supports overseas missionaries and any of them are on home stay, invite them to worship with you and bring greetings from the church in another part of the world. Find out which RCA missionaries may be available by contacting Kathy DeKock at kdekock@rca.org.
