A Family Christmas Eve Service
Gather around an Advent wreath for a simple, at-home service to help prepare for Christmas Day. You can take turns doing the readings and lighting the candles.
Reading: John 1:1-5 (The Message)
“The Word was first, the Word present to God, God present to the Word. The Word was God, in readiness for God from day one. Everything was created through him; nothing—not one thing!—came into being without him. What came into existence was Life, and the Life was Light to live by. The Life-Light blazed out of the darkness; the darkness couldn’t put it out.”
Light the first candle.
Reading: Isaiah 9:2
“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; Those who lived in a land of deep darkness—on them light has shined.”
Light the second candle.
Reading: Isaiah 9:6-7a (NIV)
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end.”
Light the third candle.
Reading: Luke 1:32-33
“He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

Read a paraphrase of the nativity story written for children, or tell the story in your own words.
