A BRIEF HISTORY OF SCHISM AND SEPARATION

Although disagreement within the Reformed Church in America is painful, it’s not new. Over the denomination’s four centuries of life and ministry, we have fought more than once—and sometimes bitterly. The Commission on History has put together a paper summarizing three such events of schism within the RCA as well as two disagreements that ended in one group seceding from the whole. The paper serves as a reminder that discord within our denomination is part of our history. And the dialogue that results from it may move us toward a vibrant future.
