Eighth Sunday after Pentecost (Year B)
Sentences, adapted from Psalm 89
Leader: I will sing of your steadfast love, O Lord, forever;
With my mouth I will proclaim your faithfulness to all generations.
People: We declare that your steadfast love is established forever;
Your faithfulness is as firm as the heavens.
Reader 1: You have made a covenant with your chosen ones;
You have established your descendants forever and built a throne for all generations.
Reader 2: Let the heavens praise your wonders, O Lord,
May we exalt your faithfulness for all time.
People: Who can be compared to the Lord? Who among the heavenly beings is like God our creator?
Leader: The Lord of hosts is mighty and God's faithfulness surrounds all his people.
Reader 3: God rules the raging sea;
When the waves rise, the Lord stills them.
Reader 4: The heavens are yours.
The earth is also yours;
All that is in the world belongs to you.
Leader: Happy are the people who celebrate your glory and walk in the light of your countenance.
People: We exalt in your name all day long and we extol your righteousness.
All: Blessed be the Lord forever. Amen and amen!
Read together: Psalm 23
Call to Confession, from Ephesians 2:13
You who were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
Prayer of Confession, from The Book of Common Prayer
You cannot be contained or abridged.
In your loving and merciful presence, we confess
Our sinfulness, our shortcomings, and our offenses against you.
You know how often we have gone astray
And you are familiar with the gravity of our imperfections.
We have foolishly questioned your authority,
We have haphazardly confused your abundance.
Have compassion on us, Lord, and forgive our iniquities.
Help us to worship you and walk in your ways.
Live within us and move amongst us,
For the sake of your son Jesus Christ, our Savior.
Almighty and most merciful Father,
We have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep.
We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts.
We have offended against your holy laws.
We have left undone those things which we have ought to have done;
And we have done things which we ought not to have done;
And there is nothing good in us.
O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders.
Spare those, O God, who confess their faults.
Restore those who are penitent
According to your promises declared unto us in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Grant that we may hereafter
Live a godly, righteous, and sober life;
To the glory of your name.
Assurance of Pardon, adapted from Jeremiah 23:4-6
The Lord has gathered us and called us by name. We shall fear no longer, nor shall we be dismayed, nor shall any be missing. The Lord is our righteousness. The Lord is our song.
Prayer for Illumination
Fed us, O Lord,
By your hand of plenty and by your blessing of abundance.
