First Sunday in Lent (Year B)

To you, O Lord, we lift up our souls.
In you we trust and are never put to shame.
Show us your ways, Lord; teach us your paths.
Guide your servants in truth, for our hope is in you.
We remember your great mercy and love, for they surpass all history.
Remember us, God, according to your steadfast love.
Good and upright is the Lord, keeping his covenant and decrees.
The friendship of the Lord is ours forever; the covenant of the Lord is known to all.

Adapted from Psalm 25

Call to Confession

Jesus Christ suffered for our sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. Jesus Christ was put to death in the flesh but was made alive in the Spirit that we who die in the flesh also rise in the Spirit.

Adapted from 1 Peter 3:18-20

Prayer of Confession

Merciful Lord, We remember the sending of your perfect Son, Jesus Christ,
who experienced true death that we may experience true life.
We confess that we are people broken by sin;
our patience is fleeting and our demands are insatiable.
Forgive us for our reluctant hearts and leery minds.
Grant to us your faith for where we fall short,
your hope for what you desire in our lives.
May we be overcome less by the floods of this world
and overwhelmed more by the baptism of your Holy Spirit.
It is in Jesus Christ that we pray all things,

Assurance of Pardon

Jesus Christ has risen, gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him. Our appeal to God has been made by Jesus Christ himself. Amen.

Adapted from 1 Peter 3:21-22

God said to Noah and to his sons with him, "As for me, I am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you, and with every living creature that is with you…never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth. This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth."

Genesis 9:8-11, 17

Prayer for Illumination

God of glory and humility, open our hearts today to receive your Word and Holy Spirit.
Define for our lives the standard of your love and the witness of your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
