Hope for a Hungry World
U.N. world hunger statistics are shocking:
- Hunger is the world's number one health risk, killing more people than AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria combined.
- One in seven people in the world will go to bed hungry tonight.
- One out of four children in developing countries is underweight.
- There are more hungry people in the world than the combined populations of the U.S., Canada, and the European Union.
Your gifts to RCA Global Mission and Reformed Church World Service support work with indigenous mission partners to offer sustainable ways for hungry people to get food.
In Bluefields, Nicaragua, donations to a feeding program provide a daily meal and medical care for 60 children who would otherwise pick through the city dump for food. In a letter to her supporters, RCA missionary doctor Bernardeth Kelly Bent, who directs the feeding program, rejoiced that 11 children from the program recently finished sixth grade and passed on to secondary school. "These are children who have been part of the [feeding] program from their preschool time. We are all thankful to God for this beautiful event that has taken place in their life because of your support of this ministry."
In India, the Give-a-Cow program provides a cow for an impoverished family; income from its milk can ensure that the family has enough to eat. Through another program in India, women learn to sew, receive a sewing machine, and set up a small business to generate income for food.
In East Africa, food security and water projects—the Daasanech Windmill Project in Ethiopia, the Maasai Well Project in Kenya, and RCWS goat and pig projects—offer a long-term way to help address food shortages due to the region's ongoing severe drought.
The mission offering for May will support RCA Global Mission food security and water projects to help supply food for hungry people around the world.
