Hunger in the U.S. and Canada
The recession of the past five years has pushed the number of people in need of food assistance way up in both Canada and the U.S. Roughly 49 million Americans—including 15.9 million children—don't know where their next meal is coming from. Each month, nearly 900,000 Canadians are assisted by food banks; 38 percent of them are children and youth. The people who turn to food pantries and food banks for help don't fit one typical profile. They include people working in low-paying jobs, receiving meager social assistance benefits, and managing on inadequate pensions.
