Opportunities are available for students and adults to serve as an individual or a couple for a few weeks or up to two years alongside RCA missionaries and mission partners.

Disaster Response

Description:

World Renew DRS volunteers conduct community-wide surveys to identify the disaster-related needs (construction, household, emotional, and financial needs) of vulnerable residents who might otherwise fall through the cracks. This information is provided to the long-term recovery group. Case managers then use the information to ensure that assistance reaches the people who need it most.

Volunteer opportunities:

Needs assessments can take place across North America and are generally conducted four to nine months after a disaster. They are not scheduled until a long-term recovery group requests the service.

Volunteer roles include:

  • Interviewers: Conduct 45-minute interviews with disaster survivors, either door to door at designated addresses with another volunteer or at a walk-in center.
  • Data entry: Enter the surveys into the database.

Description:

World Renew Disaster Response Services volunteers muck out flooded homes, remove downed trees, tarp damaged roofs, and do other minor repairs that allows survivors to return to their homes.

Volunteer opportunities vary based on the needs of a particular community following a disaster. If you have schedule flexibility and would be interested in joining a rapid response team, please contact Volunteer Engagement Program staff and we’ll send you alerts when Rapid Response teams are needed. Training is available for interested volunteers.

Description:

Mission Aviation Repair Center works to expand the reach of the gospel in Alaska by flying people and supplies where there are no roads, supporting other missionaries and their aircraft, and training missionary-minded pilots and mechanics.

Volunteer opportunities:

MARC is looking for a mission-minded individual to serve as the accountant or financial officer in Soldotna, Alaska, for at least one year. The position requires a patient, Christ-centered individual with a passion for working in a dynamic nonprofit ministry.

This volunteer would:

  • Serve as the financial officer
  • Generate financial reports
  • Manage payroll, billing, donations, etc.

Description:

This is a unique opportunity to make a difference in the life of a family affected by disability. Joni and Friends Family Retreat is a one-week vacation experience for these families. Each volunteer is paired with a disabled child or adult to simply be a friend and participate together in program activities. As you serve, you'll have the opportunity to build relationships where you can help others find hope in Jesus. Every volunteer is fully trained before the retreat begins. Ongoing support from experienced leaders is available throughout the retreat.

Description:

Just outside Los Angeles, Hawaiian Gardens is neighbor to the “gang capital of the nation.” Addiction, neglect, abuse, and poverty are realities, as well as deep-seated gang ties and violence. People need transformation through Jesus. In this place of seeming hopelessness, The Way Out Ministries brings change in the name of Jesus by starting at the root of the problems this community faces. Your skills can help support The Way Out Ministries as it lives out its mission in this community.

Individuals or couples are needed from June to August to assist with an inner-city VBS program, community outreach, carpentry, maintenance, painting, and other projects. Volunteers should be flexible, active, and willing to serve in a variety of ways.

Disaster Response

Description:

Southeastern Louisiana was hit hard by flood waters in 2016. In November 2016, RCA partner World Renew Disaster Response Services (DRS) conducted an unmet needs assessment to ensure that no one affected by the flooding would be forgotten. From January through April of 2018, a long-term reconstruction site will provide volunteer labor to repair damaged homes in the community of Hammond.

There are two primary volunteer teams:

  • Construction crew: Work ranges from minor repairs to completely new builds. People with home repair or reconstruction experience and people who are willing to help are needed.
  • Cook crew: A team of three cooks plans and prepares three meals a day for 18 to 25 people from Monday through Friday.

You will work with 18 to 25 other adults from across North America. Each team has an on-site manager who oversees the day-to-day operations of the team and the site, as well as a construction supervisor who manages the work projects. World Renew DRS provides fully equipped tool trailers. Materials are provided by the local partnering recovery group at each location.

Description:

In early October 2016, Hurricane Matthew devastated many communities in North Carolina. Some areas were still under water two weeks after the hurricane. World Renew Disaster Reponse Services (DRS) volunteers are helping residents of Tarboro, North Carolina, recover.

You can serve as a member of a reconstruction team to help bring hope to families impacted by this disaster. Team roles include:

  • Construction crew: Work may include minor repairs, complete new builds, all-home repair, and reconstruction work. People with home repair or reconstruction experience and people who can act as helpers are needed.
  • Cook crew: A team of three cooks plans and prepares three meals a day for 18 to 25 people, Monday through Friday. People with experience in preparing meals for groups and people willing to help in the kitchen are needed.

You will work with 18 to 25 other adults from across North America. Each team has an on-site manager who manages the day-to-day operations of the team and the worksite, as well as a construction supervisor who manages the work projects. World Renew DRS provides fully equipped tool trailers. Materials are provided by the local partnering recovery group at each location.

The Archives of the Reformed Church in America represents the enduring memory of the church. Documents, videos, sound recordings, and computer data keep a record of our life and mission as a people of God. They are the valuable permanent records of the RCA.

A volunteer is needed to assist the RCA archivist with scanning, filing, and a variety of other projects. Volunteers with skills in archival work, librarians, or others who are willing to learn are welcome!

Description:

As the largest non-profit on Staten Island, Project Hospitality is an interfaith organization committed to caring for people who are marginalized. People from all walks of life are blessed by Project Hospitality’s shelters, programs, and caring staff.

As a volunteer intern you can work on Staten Island with people who are homeless, hungry, and in need. You will have opportunities to help with the various ministries of Project Hospitality and assist with volunteers and mission work groups. Volunteers serve for one year from July to July. In May 2015, Hurricane Patricia hit Rio Grande Valley, Texas, with heavy rainfall and flash flooding, causing household damages and power outages.

Description:

New Horizons Foundation (NHF) is a nonprofit organization located in Lupeni, Romania, in the Southern Carpathian Alps, promoting experiential education models that advance life skills for youth.

Volunteer opportunities:

VIAȚA volunteer: North American and other international interns come to learn and serve at VIAȚA Camp among a team of Romanian leaders from mid-June to mid-August of every year. 

Social work practicum: Social work students have been involved here in Lupeni since 2008 through the study abroad program, and now are able to receive practicum hours. Interns take on significant responsibilities and provide an important contribution to the foundation.

M.Div. intern: Currently, we accept M.Div. and M.A. students in the summer for internships up to 425 hours. Your supervisors will be Jeff and Chelsea Lampen, ordained ministers of Word and sacrament in the RCA. They have the ability to oversee internships through the RCA, CRC, ELCA, PC (USA), and UCC denominations.  

Other internships: Are you a student studying sociology, anthropology, psychology, religion, community development, intercultural studies, international studies, environmental education, or another major who needs an internship? NHF would love to think outside the box to help you meet your internship requirements.

Description:

The RCA Peace Project is focused on walking alongside Christians in Israel/Palestine. One of the Peace Project partners is the Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI). This organization seeks to support local and international efforts to end the Israeli occupation and bring a resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with a just peace, based on international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.

Volunteer opportunities:

Volunteers will spend three months living in one of several EAPPI placements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. As a volunteer, you will walk alongside those who are living life under occupation. You will report human rights abuses, help protect communities, and keep international agencies informed about the situation on the ground. You will also commit yourself to advocating for change and promoting a just peace in the Holy Land when you return home.

The RCA currently has two mission coworker families with children at Sahel Academy. Sahel Academy has more than 180 students from 23 nations, including some English-speaking non-believers from Niamey’s international community.

Every year Sahel Academy has openings for K-12 instructors and for teachers’ aides for the younger grades (K-2). Sahel also strives to provide instruction in Bible, French, vocational training, art, dance, music (including piano and band instruments), Spanish (or another elective language), and other electives. Those who have experience teaching English as a second language or working with special-needs students are especially needed. This is a single- or multi-year commitment. All commitments span the academic year, which runs from August to the first week of June.

Sahel Academy operates a limited boarding program for children ages 12 and older whose parents are serving in remote mission posts or in parts of West Africa where English-language education is not available. Sahel Academy seeks volunteers with administrative or maintenance skills to manage and maintain its K-12 school and campus. Professional administrators (principals, business managers, human resources managers, etc.), office staff (clerical, administrative aides), and maintenance staff are always needed. Sahel Academy can also use builders to supervise the construction of staff housing and other buildings. This can be a multi-year commitment or a shorter commitment to replace staff who are away on furlough or medical leave.

Yucatan International Academy (YIA) is a start-up university committed to a Christian worldview while ministering to a diverse student body from a lovely campus in rural Yucatan, Mexico. In Cambodia, Christians comprise about two to three percent of the population. What is exciting about this small statistic is that most of them are first-generation Christians, who are making strong, personal choices to be markedly different in their primarily Buddhist nation.

Volunteer opportunities:

The English program at PPBS is dedicated to helping students improve their English skills. Being able to understand and speak English is beneficial for students who want to further their theological and biblical studies, since most theological resources are available in English. As a volunteer English teacher, you would assist in ESL training and serve for a minimum of five to ten months (one semester to one year of volunteering).

A volunteer teacher is also needed to teach English intensive classes for two to three weeks in summer 2017.

Description:

The Caribbean Christian Centre for the Deaf (CCCD) brings the gospel to the community of people in Jamaica who are deaf.

Support the campus manager, principal, assistant principal, and managing director for six months to one year. Responsibilities include leading, coordinating, and assisting with visiting ministry teams; facilities and grounds maintenance; and ministry development.

Essential job functions

  • Communicate with teams and Knockpatrick personnel to facilitate team activities, transportation, and hospitality.
  • Plan and manage ministry and work opportunities, including ordering and inventory control.
  • Evaluate and report on each team to Jamaican and U.S. offices.
  • Perform general maintenance, construction, and repairs of facilities and grounds as needed.
  • Organize and maintain tools, supplies, and equipment.
  • Develop ministry activities for teams in conjunction with the campus manager.

Bingham Academy is located in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa. With nearly five million people, Addis Ababa is the largest city in the Horn of Africa. Description:

Onesimos Nesib Seminary is a regional seminary of the Ethiopian Evangelical Church of Mekane Yesus that is committed to preparing leaders for ministry and church service. All courses are in English.

Trained Christian educators, pastors, and professors are needed to teach intensive courses (of one to two weeks or three to four weeks) and semester courses in Old Testament, New Testament, pastoral care and counseling, theology, worship, ethics, etc. The academic year is from September 15 to the third week of June, with breaks for Christmas (three weeks) and Easter (two weeks). Fall is the best time for volunteer intensives.

Description:

The Aira Midwifery and Nursing School is a rural nursing school of the Ethiopian Evangelical Church of Mekane Yesus. Located about 500 kilometers (311 miles) west of Addis Ababa, it equips nurses for medical service in remote, poverty-stricken, and underserved areas. Recently, the school shifted its primary focus to training midwives.

Volunteers are needed to teach prenatal and maternal care, environmental health, tropical medicine, developmental pediatrics, infectious disease, biology, chemistry, genetics, human anatomy, physiology, etc., as well as practical nursing skills. It is essential that a volunteer has a specialty that will help and bring added value to the indigenous staff. In addition to specialized opportunities, there is a need for medical volunteers who can teach medical English. 

Up to five people may volunteer at a time; two to three volunteers at a time is ideal.

The Amity Foundation is a volunteer organization in China that seeks to promote education, social service, health, community development and civil society building across China.

Volunteers are needed to serve as teachers at the college and trade school level. TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) course is provided. Volunteers teach Chinese students and have opportunities to worship with Chinese Christians. Volunteers serve for a two-year teaching term beginning in late July.

Al Raja School is a K-12 school in Bahrain with about 630 students, almost all of whom are Muslim Bahraini, though there is a small number of Christian Arab students. Offering dual English and Arabic instruction, the school aims to provide the youth of Bahrain with an education that will help them grow into strong and sensitive members of their families, their communities, and the world in which they live. Al Raja School carries out this mission by focusing on three key areas: excellence in education, development of the whole person, and equality.

Description:

Help individuals and groups who are World Renew‒Bangladesh partner staff gain confidence in using English. The volunteer will report to the World Renew‒Bangladesh country consultant. World Renew is an agency of the Christian Reformed Church and an RCA mission partner.

Serve for two or three months and support the partner staff for World RenewBangladesh by facilitating individual and group language learning sessions (80%). You will also learn about the country’s and community’s culture, practice Bangla, and build relationships in the local community (10%); complete weekly or monthly reports and write newsletters and blogs in order to keep in touch with supporters (5%); and complete a World Renew three-day orientation and attend meetings as needed (5%).
