In October 2016, Hurricane Matthew hit eight counties with severe storms, high winds, and flooding. World Renew Disaster Response Services is working in Citrus County, where over 2,800 households registered for recovery assistance.
Volunteers are needed to assist with general reconstruction, removal and replacing of sheetrock, insulation, trimming, roofing, siding, plumbing, and flooring. There is a local construction coordinator who will assign work projects that are appropriate to the size and skill level of your group.
Housing is in various churches around the community. Most churches have capacity for approximately 40 people. All the church facilities provide cots, restrooms, showers, and a kitchen where groups can prepare their own meals.
Please bring sleeping bags, pillows, towels, and toiletries. A general packing list can be found on page nine of Preparing to Serve, a guide compiled by World Renew DRS. Materials and basic tools are provided and coordinated by the local construction coordinator. Skilled tradesmen are encouraged to bring their own tools if possible. This should be discussed with the local site coordinator during the planning process.
Generally, volunteers high school age and older are welcome. Groups that include youth must have an appropriate adult-to-youth ratio and adults who are able to supervise youth for work projects. It is helpful to have a couple of people with construction experience in your group, but this is not required. The local construction coordinator will provide guidance on work projects.
