Annual Women’s Stories Day: The Courage to be Honest

Join us for this annual day of learning and refreshment. 

Our keynote speaker will be Lynn Japinga, professor of religion at Hope College in Holland, Michigan, and the 2019-2020 Hazel B. Gnade Fellow in RCA Women’s Studies at NBTS. She is the author of Loyalty and Loss: The Reformed Church in America, 1945-1994 and Preaching the Women of the Old Testament: Who They Were and Why They Matter.  Her topic is The Courage to Be Honest About Divorce, examining how divorce has been dealt with in the RCA.

Dr. Japinga will be joined by:

Irma V. Williams is an Elder and VP of the Consistory at DeWitt Reformed Church in New York, and she serves as Director of Social Services at Barrier Free Living Apartments, located in the Bronx.  She will be discussing “The Courage to Be Honest About Domestic Violence.”

Lynn Min, a licensed mental health counselor in New York, a mother of three, and a seminary graduate discerning her ordination process with the RCA while working to provide a tangible sense of the Divine, walking with people on their journeys and creating spaces where people can connect with the God within. Her topic is “The Courage to Be Honest About Where We Fit.”

Pamela Pater Ennis, Executive Director of Hudson River Care & Counseling, LLC, in Hudson and Bergen Counties in New Jersey, and adjunct faculty member in Pastoral Care and Counseling at NBTS. She will lead “The Courage to Be Honest About Mental Health”

Women’s Stories Day, hosted by the Reformed Church Center at NBTS in cooperation with RCA Women’s Transformation and Leadership, is open to everyone, and will include worship, time for discussion and fellowship, and lunch. The suggested donation for lunch is $10.00, but seminarians and members of the NBTS faculty and staff are free, and everyone is welcome, regardless of ability to pay. Please register no later than Thursday, 19 March.

Crossroads Women’s Retreat

All women are warmly invited to join their sisters from the Regional Synod of the MidAtlantics for their annual Crossroads Women's Retreat, Friday–Saturday, April 17–18, 2020.  For more than 30 years, the Regional Synod of the MidAtlantics has hosted this wonderful retreat at Harvey Cedars Bible Conference. Harvey Cedars is tucked away in a quiet spot on Long Beach Island, on the New Jersey shore. You will find a spacious yet charming facility, located on scenic Barnegat Bay with beautiful water views. Honoring Our Stories Women's Retreat

Join us for a weekend of spiritual renewal and refreshment, connecting with God and other sisters in Christ. We will gather on Friday evening for worship and social time, and then spend Saturday engaged in interactive Bible study, workshops, prayer and reflection, labyrinth walks and plenty of time for conversation in a serene, beautiful setting overlooking the Hudson River. Our retreat theme centers on honoring our stories, embracing the joys and challenges of life, and celebrating how God meets us in the midst, beckoning us to live into our gifts and callings, whatever our stage in life may be. Sunday morning concludes with our capstone workshop and worship with Holy Communion. Rev. Liz Testa and Pastor Alisha Riepma will co- lead the retreat.

Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, is the site for the 214th session of the General Synod of the Reformed Church in America. General Synod 2020 will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 11 and end at noon on June 16, 2020. There are many opportunities for you to participate—as a regular or corresponding delegate (each regional synod has slots for two women and one youth to attend), as a college student, seminarian, or as a guest observer. Look for registration in early 2020 along with information about our annual Women’s Connection Dinner and hospitality lounge!
