General Synod 2018: Offerings

Delegates are invited to give to any or all of the following offerings, which will be taken during General Synod worship services, as God leads. If you choose to give by check, please make your check out to “Reformed Church in America” and write the specific offering designation (Disability Concerns, Arabic language ministries, or Brazil) on the memo line. (Note: CRC delegates will make their checks out to “Christian Reformed Church in North America”.)

Opening worship (joint with the CRC): Disability Concerns

An offering will be received at the joint opening worship session on Thursday, June 7, for RCA/CRC Disability Concerns. This offering will support the full participation of people with disabilities in learning communities hosted by RCA/CRC Disability Concerns—a value shared by both the CRC and RCA and expressed jointly through our Disability Concerns partnership since 2009. A disability learning community seeks to move RCA and CRC congregations from awareness to engagement. Participating churches are strongly encouraged to include people with disabilities on their teams. While their participation adds much-needed perspective, diversity, and life experience, the accommodations that people with disabilities may require to participate may add extra costs to the learning community. Offerings received at opening worship will help to ensure the full participation of people with disabilities in RCA/CRC Disability Concerns learning communities.

Sunday evening community service (joint with the CRC): Arabic-language ministry

An offering will be received at the Sunday evening community worship service for the newly launched Arabic-language media ministry of Back to God Hour International (CRC), Words of Hope (RCA), and the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Egypt—Synod of the Nile. The new joint project is called al-Hoda, an Arabic term meaning “the one who guides others back to the true way, or to God.” The partnership fits well with Words of Hope’s model of coming alongside strong, indigenous ministries in order to help expand and strengthen their media outreach. Using the Internet, social media, and smartphone apps, al-Hoda programs will call the lost to faith in Jesus Christ. The ministry will also distribute discipleship resources to nurture followers of Jesus.

Closing worship (RCA service): ministry in Brazil

An offering will be received at closing worship on Tuesday, June 12, for RCA Global Mission’s strategic impact area in Brazil. Of the more than 340 indigenous ethnic groups in Brazil, only 150 have an indigenous church, and Christianity is present in only 17.5 percent of the 7,693 riverside villages in the state of Amazonas. Global Mission is partnering with the Presbyterian Church of Manaus (IPManaus) to plant churches and prepare missionaries to bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to people living both in the city of Manaus and along the Amazon River. IPManaus has been ministering in the city of Manaus and reaching indigenous groups living along the Amazon River for more than 110 years.
