On Thursday, June 8, General Synod declared Chad Pierce a General Synod professor. Pierce, an ordained minister in the RCA, is pastor of Faith Christian Reformed Church in Holland, Michigan.

“It’s a way I’ve wanted to serve the church for a long time,” said Pierce of his appointment. “As somebody who likes to bridge the gap between the academy and the church, this is a statement that my studies are a way to fulfill the command to love God with my mind.”

Pierce has served as a professor of New Testament at Central College in Pella, Iowa, and as an adjunct faculty member of Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan, and Calvin College and Kuyper College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He has taught courses for the RCA’s Ministerial Formation Certification Agency and has been a member of the Reformed Candidates’ Supervision and Care Certification Committee. He has also served on the Pastoral Formation Coordinating Committee.

Pierce has postgraduate degrees from Jerusalem University College (M.A.), Western Theological Seminary (M.Div.), and Durham University (Ph.D.).

In the RCA, General Synod professor is one of the four offices of the church, along with minister of Word and sacrament, elder, and deacon. General Synod professors prepare and certify candidates for the ministry of Word and sacrament and offer a “ministry of teaching within the RCA as a whole," according to the Book of Church Order. There are ten current General Synod professors.
