Synod Votes to Develop Family Leave Policies for Ministers

On Monday, delegates voted “to encourage all classes to develop and adopt family leave policies, commensurate with other professional positions in society, for ordained clergy serving in churches within their boundaries, as soon as practicable.”

The Commission for Women put forward the recommendation in response to a survey they conducted of RCA ministers.

Though the recommendation was made by the Commission for Women, it addresses family leave policies for both men and women. According to the report, women are often the primary caregivers, but “a family leave policy would allow both women and men to share in this caregiving ministry during times of significant life change or upheaval.”

A clear policy also provides clarity and reduces stress for ministers and churches when time off for caregiving is needed, the commission’s report said.
