October 2011: Poetry

The Way to Pray: A Triolet

by Maria Krebs

The first time I decided to pray
I wanted to do it correctly
In my best dress—white and jade,
the first time I decided to pray.
I went to the most holy place
that I knew—our orange tree.
The first time I decided to pray
I wanted to do it correctly.

I didn't yet know what to say
to the God who created me.
Perched in the branches, hidden away,
I didn't yet know what to say.
So I said thanks for the orange that
I picked and began to peel.
I didn't yet know what to say
to the God who created me.
