The Way to Pray: A Triolet
by Maria Krebs
The first time I decided to pray I wanted to do it correctly In my best dress—white and jade, the first time I decided to pray. I went to the most holy place that I knew—our orange tree. The first time I decided to pray I wanted to do it correctly.
I didn't yet know what to say to the God who created me. Perched in the branches, hidden away, I didn't yet know what to say. So I said thanks for the orange that I picked and began to peel. I didn't yet know what to say to the God who created me.
Maria Krebs graduated from Hope College in Holland, Michigan, in May 2011. She currently lives, works, and writes in Seattle, Washington.
