General Synod

General Synod 2015 met June 11-16 on the campus of Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, Illinois, and addressed many aspects of ministry and mission in the RCA.

Returning to discussion around new business that was suspended from Saturday, General Synod on Monday afternoon voted to incur all costs of the new special council they had earlier approved.

After nearly two hours in judicial session, synod delegates affirmed the role of the classis in receiving ministers of Word and sacrament into membership. 

Delegates to General Synod 2015 have elected Evan Vermeer as synod’s new president-elect. 

Monday afternoon, General Synod recognized 50 congregations as Missional Impact Partners for their financial support of the mission and ministry of the RCA.

On Monday, delegates to General Synod 2015 nominated vice presidential candidates.

On Monday, the Commission on Christian Action (CCA) reported back on mass incarceration-related recommendations approved by last year’s synod. 

On Sunday night, synod delegates came together to discuss the RCA’s future as a multiethnic church. 

Following extensive debate Saturday morning and afternoon, synod delegates voted to form a special council charged to describe a “constitutional pathway forward” for the RCA regarding human-sexuality questions related to ordination and marriage. The vote passed by a 2-to-1 margin.

“This is the first time we are bringing a Transformed & Transforming report to synod,” general secretary Tom De Vries said. “Tonight we are talking about what [the ministry plan] looks like, and where are we seeing God at work in our congregations.
